Eating healthy food is becoming as expensive as healthcare these days. Sometimes you could find yourself in a situation where you can’t afford both.
I can relate.
In 2002 when my sickness started I didn’t have health insurance. I was desperate, knowing that I couldn’t afford the surgery I needed at that time and eating healthy food was expensive, or so I thought.
Experiences like mine make humbles and you begin to find creative ways to survive. Yes, I did survive, and today I am able to take care of me and family on a budget.
I want to show you how you can eat healthy for cheap.
How to shop for groceries on a budget
First of all, everything starts with your groceries. I do my groceries in two different ways:
Once a month I buy all the grains, nuts and seeds. Then I buy vegetables, frozen fruits, and all the oil.
Second, I buy all the fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and my animal protein once a week although we are not big on animal protein in my home. We eat fish or shrimp twice a week and settle for grass-fed beef and chicken once a month.
Next is how I fix it all together.
I dedicate Sunday to clean all the food: grains, nuts, and seeds. I cook the rice and all the other grains in bulk and store them away in the fridge for the week.
My vegetables are not left out. I clean all the vegetables, chop and put them in a bag for the rest of the week. And since I’m on a budget, I don’t like to spend money outside the house. That’s how I eat healthy for cheap.
You can spend $10 or under $10 to make dinner for a family of four or five because that’s what I do.
For instance, I can chop one cabbage and make it a salad by soaking with apple cider, vinegar, and salt and massage it very well.
I make my tasty vinaigrette using olive oil, lemon or lime, apple cider and I season it with ginger and garlic.
So with one cabbage, two sweet potatoes, you have a very rich meal. You can use potato noodles sometimes or just boil your potatoes. It is very satisfying if seasoned very well with curry and good herbs.
The best part is that the kids love it!
So ten dollars and you may be able to use one cabbage and sweet potatoes or any other thing. If you like yam, you can do yam or whatever you have handy. This will make dinner for a family of three, four or five.
With less than $10 I do that all the time.
